Birmingham Alabama Private Investigators are required by Alabama law to be licensed through our State's regulatory board. This law is just a few years old and has already been instrumental in raising the standards in this state. The law requires that anyone conducting investigative services to the public must be licensed. There are some excerptions that are listed in the State law which can be found on the Regulatory Board's website (www.apib.alabama.gov) If you hire an investigator, you want to make sure that anyone who works on your case is a licensed investigator. There are no exceptions for trainees or apprentices. A licensed investigator cannot work someone who is unlicensed under his or her license. This does make it somewhat difficult to hire new investigators because they have to go through the entire license process before they can be put out in the field even as an assistant. The Alabama Private Investigator's Association is currently working on legislation that would implement an apprentice ship program and require a longer training period for inexperienced investigators. If you find that someone is using unlicensed investigators in the field, please report them. The evidence obtained by an unlicensed investigator is obtained illegally and may not be allowed in court. That is an unfortunate situation because the client is the one who ends up without the benefit of the evidence that he or she paid for. Alabama Licensed Investigator's license status can be verified online by going to www.apib.alabama.gov and clicking on the roster. Anyone holding him or herself out to be a licenses investigator should have an ID card (hard plastic like a driver's license with a State seal) issued by the "State of Alabama Private Investigation Board”. Don't let them pass off a city, county or state occupational license. At one time occupational license were all that were required but the new laws changed that. An investigator who operates a business may still be required to have an occupational license in the State, city and county where he or she holds an office; but that does not replace the State professional license. For more info on this, visit the State's website www.apib.alabama.gov.
